Nollywood actress Dayo Amusa has spoken out against the criticism celebrities often face on social media for not speaking publicly enough about Nigeria’s security issues.
In a post on X, Amusa described the pressure on celebrities to constantly address insecurity—at the expense of promoting their creative work as crazy. She noted, The bullying many of you subject our colleagues to in the creative industry is crazy… They can’t freely share their opinions or post about their jobs without being called insensitive.
Amusa also addressed the financial realities of filmmaking, making it clear she would not give in to demands to continually post about kidnappings or criticize the government. “We go to the bank to take loans with high interest rates just to shoot movies, but you want us to suspend our jobs and post videos of kidnappings and curse the government daily, while you’re comfortably tweeting from your office, she wrote.
She further stated that she is unmoved by online trolls and would not compromise her values or brand to appease social media mobs. I have other streams of income; don’t come under my post to act silly, I’ll send you home.
Amusa also expressed sympathy for families affected by recent abductions in Oyo State, praying for the safe return of the kidnapped children and teachers.
Her comments come amid increased calls from celebrities for action on Nigeria’s security challenges. British-Nigerian rapper Skepta recently appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the international community, expressing distress over the country’s suffering and calling for urgent global support in addressing what he described as a deep level of injustice.
