During a recent appearance on the KaaTruths podcast, Sky B candidly discussed his sudden withdrawal from the spotlight and the circumstances that led to his prolonged absence from the music industry.
The singer revealed that his troubles began after he introduced fellow musician Duncan Mighty to his former record label a decision he now calls catastrophic.
Sky B admitted that his biggest mistake was bringing Duncan Mighty to the label instead of Timaya, whom the label had actually preferred.
I entered the wrong record company. I brought my brother, Duncan Mighty, into the company. When he arrived, I was already on tour in Europe. He came and caused problems within the record company,” Sky B recounted.
He explained that the label executive blamed him for introducing Duncan Mighty instead of Timaya, resulting in both artists being asked to leave the label.
All the ‘Ma Bebe’ remixes I did and shot in Switzerland were sponsored by the label boss, but he seized everything. That was what affected me, Sky B shared. My mistake was bringing Duncan Mighty into that record company. I did not know it would cost me my career.”
Sky B went on to reveal that when the label inquired about his second album, Pray For Me, he suggested they prioritize Duncan’s album instead, believing it would sell well because Duncan was his brother.
He had hoped that after Duncan’s project, the label would turn their attention to his own. I didn’t know they wouldn’t finish Duncan’s project, and that’s how I left the limelight. I was the one who put my brother’s hand into it, he said.
Sky B also shared his initial vision of creating a collaborative setup similar to Mo’ Hits Records. However, as his career stalled, he became increasingly frustrated. Before the 10-year contract ended, I had smoked a lot of Indian hemp because I was frustrated. I smoked until I lost my lyrics. There was even a time people said I had died, he recalled.
He also mentioned that Duncan Mighty no longer answers his calls and reflected on warnings he had received about the partnership. I was warned, but I told people he was my brother, Sky B concluded.
