Veteran New Zealand actor Sam Neill, celebrated for his iconic roles in Jurassic Park and Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 78.
His family announced his passing in a statement shared on his social media page on Monday. They described his death in Sydney, Australia, as “sudden and unexpected,” noting that while the cause was not disclosed, Neill was cancer-free at the time.
Neill had previously undergone treatment for angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He spoke publicly about his diagnosis in 2023, later revealing that treatment had successfully left him in remission.
Neill’s portrayal of palaeontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic Jurassic Park brought him international fame. He reprised the role in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion, cementing his status as a central figure in the beloved franchise.
On television, Neill was widely acclaimed for his performance as Chief Inspector Chester Campbell in the hit British series Peaky Blinders. As a determined police officer charged with taking down Tommy Shelby and his gang, Neill’s character became a formidable presence in the show’s first two seasons, opposite Cillian Murphy’s Shelby.
Over a distinguished career spanning more than fifty years, Neill appeared in a range of acclaimed films and series, including The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, The Tudors, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. He effortlessly moved between independent films, television, and major Hollywood productions.
Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill relocated to New Zealand as a child, ultimately becoming one of the country’s most internationally recognised actors. Outside of acting, he ran a vineyard in New Zealand and charmed a new generation of fans with his witty social media posts about life on his farm and his animals.
In 2023, Neill published his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, offering reflections on his career, family, and experience with cancer.
