Chelsea have completed the signing of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth £117 million ($157 million), making him the most expensive British player in history.
The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that runs until 2033, the club announced on Tuesday.

This record-breaking transfer eclipses the previous British record set earlier in July, when Manchester City signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million. Rogers also becomes Chelsea’s most expensive signing ever, surpassing the £107 million paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Chelsea’s ambitious move highlights their intent, convincing Rogers to join from Villa despite missing out on Champions League football next season—a competition his former club will play in. The Blues had pursued Rogers for two years and ultimately beat out Arsenal, who declined to match Aston Villa’s asking price.
Rogers’ exit is another setback for Villa boss Unai Emery, following Youri Tielemans’ transfer to Manchester United and Lucas Digne’s anticipated move to Paris Saint-Germain. “Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the club for his service and future career,” Villa said in a statement, praising his professionalism and commitment.
Due to a sell-on clause, Championship side Middlesbrough will receive 20 percent of the transfer fee after selling Rogers to Villa in 2024. Rogers netted 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa and played a decisive role in their Europa League final victory over Freiburg in May. Last season, he enjoyed a breakout year, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists in 55 appearances. Villa noted: “He will always remain a core part of our recent great moments and memories.”
At Chelsea, new manager Xabi Alonso faces the challenge of integrating Rogers alongside Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda in the attacking midfield. Rogers is expected to join up with Chelsea following a post-World Cup break, while Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho is tipped to depart Stamford Bridge before the transfer window closes.
Rogers shares a close friendship with Palmer, having played together in Manchester City’s youth academy. Notably, Palmer’s iconic ‘cold’ celebration was originally inspired by Rogers during his time at Middlesbrough.
Rogers’ arrival is seen as a statement that Chelsea can still attract elite talent, even after a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season and missing out on European competition.
