The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has strongly condemned the reported assault of a lecturer from the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, following allegations of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student.
The incident, which took place on campus on Saturday, August 15, 2026, was recorded on video and widely circulated on social media.
In a statement released by the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, UNIZIK described the incident as deeply regrettable and firmly denounced any form of violence, self-help, or what it referred to as “jungle justice.” The university emphasized its unwavering stance against sexual misconduct, harassment, and all forms of inappropriate behavior, as repeatedly affirmed by Vice-Chancellor Ugochukwu Anyaehie.
However, the university management stressed that all allegations must be addressed through established institutional procedures and due process. “No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the university environment,” the statement read.
In response to the seriousness of the situation, the university has launched an immediate, thorough, and impartial investigation to determine the facts and context surrounding the incident. The case is currently under full review, with relevant administrative processes underway to ensure justice is served fairly and objectively for all parties involved.
UNIZIK reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the dignity, safety, and wellbeing of both staff and students, and pledged to take decisive action against any conduct that undermines these values. The university stated that further updates on the matter will be provided as the investigation progresses.
