Two separate fire incidents in the Ikorodu and Surulere areas of Lagos State have destroyed goods and property worth millions of naira, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, revealed in a statement on Monday that the first fire broke out at Adamo Bus Stop, Ikorodu, in the early hours of the day.
The blaze, believed to have started due to faulty electrical wiring, originated in a hairdressing shop and quickly spread to neighboring shops, affecting three in total.
Goods and property valued at millions of naira were lost, but prompt response from LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Imota, ensured the fire was swiftly contained and extinguished.
No deaths or injuries were reported, and dampening-down procedures were carried out to prevent re-ignition.
In a separate incident on Monday morning, two shops—one dealing in furniture, the other in provisions—were gutted by fire at 19 Olatunde Onimole Street, near Bakery Bus Stop, Surulere. The cause of this fire has yet to be determined, but both shops and their contents were completely destroyed.
Again, there were no casualties, and emergency teams conducted dampening-down operations to prevent a recurrence.
Meanwhile, Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu also noted that LASEMA teams responded to several road-related emergencies between Sunday and Monday.
On Sunday afternoon, the Alpha Eagle Response Team from the Cappa, Oshodi LASEMA Response Unit managed a truck breakdown at Olupese Bus Stop, inward Cappa.
The truck, carrying soft drinks, suffered a mechanical fault and caused a traffic obstruction. LASEMA, working alongside the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police, cleared the obstruction using heavy-duty equipment, restoring normal traffic flow.
Also on Sunday, LASEMA’s Tiger Squad responded to a road traffic accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Obalende, where a commercial bus overturned after a tyre burst. The vehicle was towed to the LASTMA yard at Olowu, and paramedics provided immediate medical attention to the victims.
In the early hours of Monday, the Alpha Eagle Team was deployed to Ilupeju Road, inward Cappa, following a tanker breakdown that blocked the road. An empty tanker developed a mechanical fault and was evacuated to a lay-by with police support, allowing traffic to resume.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu commended the professionalism and coordination of all emergency responders, including LASTMA, LASAMBUS, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property through ongoing investment in training, modern equipment, and the decentralisation of LASEMA Response Units for improved emergency response times.
He also urged residents to prioritise vehicle maintenance and electrical safety to prevent future incidents.
