Ivie Atuwatse III, queen consort of the Warri kingdom and wife of Ogiame Atuwatse III, the 21st Olu of Warri, recently opened up about the joys and challenges she experiences as the monarch’s spouse.
In an interview with BBC News Pidgin, Ivie shared that one of her greatest pleasures in marriage is witnessing how much people admire her husband’s accomplishments and personality.
What I enjoy most about being married to His Majesty is seeing the world celebrate his brilliance and charisma qualities I also cherish in him, she said. “When others praise him, it excites me even more. I’m extremely proud of the man he is, and seeing others appreciate him brings me immense joy.
However, Ivie acknowledged that the demands of her husband’s royal duties can sometimes be difficult to share. “But on the flip side, as they say, when food is sweet, even flies want a taste,” she quipped.
There are times when he’s busy, and it can be hard having to share my husband with all the responsibilities he carries. We’re still learning how to balance it, because sometimes I just want him all to myself.”
During the interview, Ivie was asked about the prospect of her husband taking another wife, given his previous stance against polygamy. She firmly rejected the idea, saying she is more than enough for him.
First of all, His Majesty would never change his mind about polygamy. Let’s settle that right now,” she declared. “Just me alone—I’m like three women in one. I’m enough for him.”
