A motorcyclist, identified simply as Mohammed, has died after being attacked by suspected robbers wielding a machete in the Baiyeku area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The assailants allegedly severed one of his ears during the attack, which occurred on Sunday evening as they attempted to rob him.
According to reports, the suspects had earlier carried out operations elsewhere in the neighbourhood and were leaving the area when they entered Mohammed’s shop, where he also ran a phone-charging business. There, they attacked him with a machete, inflicting severe injuries.
Mohammed was rushed to a hospital for treatment but succumbed to his wounds and died on Monday.
A community member, who spoke to PUNCH Metro on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident, confirmed Mohammed’s death. “Mohammed used to charge phones for people. On the night of the attack, the robbers entered his shop and tried to rob him. They attacked him with a machete and cut off his ear. He was taken to the hospital, but we heard he died this morning,” the source said.
The source also revealed that other casualties were recorded in another part of the community where the suspects had allegedly struck earlier.
A police source confirmed that the incident had been reported to the station and that an investigation was underway. “The incident was reported at our station, and we are aware of it. Although we suspect the attack was carried out by cultists due to another cult-related incident in the area that same evening, we are still investigating,” the police source said.
When contacted on Monday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said she was unaware of the incident and promised to get back to our correspondent. She had yet to do so as of the time this report was filed.
