Fresh details have emerged about the passing of veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, shedding light on the circumstances of his death.
Duru, aged 57, reportedly died at approximately 10 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the National Hospital in Abuja.
According to Channels Television, a family source confirmed the time and location of his passing on Friday.
The confirmation offers further insight into the loss, which was first announced by Duru’s family in the early hours of Friday. In a statement on his official Instagram page, the family revealed that the actor died after a brief illness: We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness.
They also expressed gratitude for the prayers, love, and support extended by friends, colleagues, and well-wishers during this difficult time.
While the National Hospital has been identified as the place of his death, the family has not disclosed the specific illness that claimed his life. The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the Nigerian film industry. Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo, in a heartfelt Instagram post, described Duru as “one of Nollywood’s most versatile and accomplished performers,” adding, “A consummate actor has left the stage. One of the most flexible, prolific performers Nigeria ever produced. Rest in peace my brother.”
Duru’s death comes less than two years after the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024—a tragedy that deeply impacted the family. The actor had previously described his late son as a courageous young man who fought bravely.
Throughout his distinguished career, Duru earned widespread acclaim, particularly for his portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s 1995 classic, Rattlesnake. He appeared in numerous notable productions, including One Chance, cementing his status as a respected figure in Nigerian entertainment.
Francis Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children. As of Friday, the family had yet to announce funeral arrangements.
