Roberto Martinez hailed a ‘football statement’ after Everton shattered their transfer record by signing Romelu Lukaku in a £28million deal.
The Belgium international has been Martinez’s No 1 target for the summer and after extensive negotiations with Chelsea, Everton eventually landed Lukaku, who has signed a five-year contract that will be worth around £70,000 per week.
The fee paid for Lukaku smashes the previous highest of £15million that was invested in another Belgian, Marouane Fellaini, back in August 2008 and chairman Bill Kenwright described it as being the end of an ’11-month quest’ to keep him at Goodison Park.
