Augustine Okocha, the former Super Eagles captain, has reminisced about the iconic solo goal that changed the course of his career while playing for Eintracht Frankfurt.
The memorable strike came against renowned goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, then at Karlsruher SC and on the verge of joining Bayern Munich. Okocha recalled that the goal where he skillfully dribbled past Kahn before scoring marked the first time he gained recognition beyond Germany’s borders.
Speaking on the Obi-Wan podcast on Monday, Okocha, affectionately known as JJ, described Kahn as being in peak form that season. Despite the era predating social media, the goal quickly became a viral sensation on European television, cementing its status as a defining highlight of Okocha’s career.
That goal changed my life. It was the moment I became known outside of Germany, Okocha recounted. It was replayed all over European TV, even though there was no social media then.
Reflecting on the moment, Okocha explained that he held onto the ball longer than intended, not to embarrass Kahn, but to find the perfect chance to score.
He added with a laugh that his manager at Frankfurt later joked his place in the team depended on that goal going in: Had I missed, I might never have played for the club again.
Okocha also mentioned meeting Kahn since then, but admitted he never brought up the famous goal, joking about Kahn’s stern demeanor: He’s a big lad and he never smiles you don’t want to bring that up.
Okocha began his European journey at a lower-division German club before making his name at Eintracht Frankfurt.
He would later play for Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bolton Wanderers, establishing himself as one of Africa’s most talented and entertaining attacking midfielders.
