The Anambra State Government has introduced a new rule in schools that will affect how pupils use their textbooks and how parents spend on their children’s education.
Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, announced the directive on Friday in Awka during a workshop for private school owners and teachers.
She said the practice of pupils writing assignments directly inside textbooks has been banned, describing it as wasteful and unsustainable. According to her, the move will make textbooks reusable for younger siblings and ease financial pressure on families.
The commissioner warned that government will not tolerate non-compliance, urging teachers, parents, and school administrators to ensure strict adherence.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh also frowned at the growing trend of elaborate graduation parties in nursery and primary schools, insisting the state would clamp down on such practices, which she said were becoming avenues for financial exploitation of parents.
Teaching and running a school is a divine call and should not be mortgaged for financial gains, she said.
The ministry further encouraged stakeholders to report defaulters to the government for necessary action.
