Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clinched the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections, emerging victorious over former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and former banker, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, in a keenly contested primary.
Read more: Atiku defeats Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen to secure ADC presidential ticketThe results were officially announced on Wednesday night. Atiku secured an emphatic win with 1,855,787 votes, while Amaechi received 509,397 votes and Hayatu-Deen garnered 180,903 votes.
The party reported a total of 2,546,457 votes cast out of 3,113,599 registered party members, underscoring strong participation nationwide. Atiku’s margin of victory was significant—he led Amaechi by 1,346,390 votes and Hayatu-Deen by 1,674,884 votes.
The ADC primary process began on Monday, May 25, 2026, with party members from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory taking part. The party adopted the direct primary method after its three main aspirants declined to step down for a consensus candidate, despite appeals from stakeholders.
While the party leadership initially considered an affirmation process, it ultimately settled on direct primaries in line with the requirements of the Electoral Act 2026
