Chicharito scores 90-minute goal to secure LA Galaxy win over defending champs NYCFC

The two Los Angeles teams kicked off the MLS season at home, and both came away with victories that generated a lot of confidence around their institutions after poor past campaigns for both organizations.

The Los Angeles Galaxy’s win on Sunday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, when they hosted defending MLS champions New York City FC, in a match that was dominated from start to finish by the Southern California side against a team from the “Big Apple” that looked tired due to their mid-week activity in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Agonizing goal by Chicharito Hernandez
The Galaxy won by a score of 1-0 and the goal came precisely in the 90th minute when after a mistake in the NYCFC’s start, Mexican striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez took the ball at the entrance of the area on the left side and with a spectacular overflow, left Maxime Chanot in the way and with a cross shot with his right foot, left goalkeeper Sean Johnson with no chance.

For the second consecutive season, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, among other teams, scored in the first game of the season, in 2011 he scored a brace in the victory against then debutants Inter Miami.

What’s next for the Galaxy and NYCFC?

On matchday two, both teams will play next Saturday, March 5, the Galaxy will be the luxury visitor in Charlotte FC’s home opener, while NYCFC will repeat as visitors when they take on the Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada.

Last Saturday, LAFC got the season off to a great start with a 3-0 win over Colorado Rapids at the Banc of California Stadium, with a hat-trick from Mexico’s Carlos Vela, who scored in the 20th (penalty kick), 35th and 50th minutes.
