Crystal Palace lifted their first-ever UEFA Conference League trophy on Wednesday night, edging past Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in a dramatic final at Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena.

The opening half was a tense affair, with both teams battling fiercely in midfield and squandering several chances. Palace looked the more dangerous side, with Ismaïla Sarr, Daniel Munoz, and Tyrick Mitchell consistently testing the Rayo defense. The English side nearly broke the deadlock just before halftime, as Mitchell’s powerful header grazed the post and Munoz missed a promising aerial opportunity moments later.
The breakthrough finally arrived early in the second half. After Adam Wharton’s shot was parried by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, Mateta reacted quickest to bury the rebound from close range, sending the Palace fans into raptures.
Rayo Vallecano responded with attacking intent in the final stages, pushing for an equaliser. Sergio Camello fired over the bar in the 83rd minute, and Florian Lejeune headed wide from close range late on. Their last significant chance came in stoppage time, when Pedro Diaz’s long-range effort drifted just wide.
Dean Henderson, Palace’s goalkeeper, made crucial saves to preserve the lead, including a key stop from Alemao, ensuring the Eagles held on to their slender advantage.
The final, attended by 39,176 spectators and officiated by Italian referee Maurizio Mariani, was marked by intense physicality and several bookings.
For Crystal Palace, the victory not only brought continental silverware but also secured a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League. Despite the heartbreak, Rayo Vallecano earned plaudits for their remarkable run to the final—marking their first major European campaign in over 20 years.
