The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, has pledged to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to find lasting solutions to tanker accidents and related fatalities in the state.
Sector Commander Joyce Alexander gave the assurance while hosting NUPENG executives, stressing the need for joint efforts to address the rising cases of tanker crashes.
In a press statement on Saturday, the Sector Public Education Officer, Margaret Onabe, revealed that the FRSC agreed with NUPENG’s call for the establishment of truck parks, citing United Nations road traffic regulations.
“The FRSC, Anambra State Command, is ready to work with NUPENG in tackling tanker accidents and their deadly consequences,” the statement read.
The FRSC also urged private truck owners to register their vehicles and ensure their drivers strictly adhere to safety regulations. Additionally, the agency requested that NUPENG facilitate monthly safety awareness sessions for drivers.
Earlier, NUPENG Chairman Izuchukwu Onaka attributed the frequent tanker accidents to poor road conditions and urged the government to prioritize road repairs. He also called on the FRSC to advocate for designated truck parks to help drivers rest and minimize night journeys.
The meeting concluded with plans for a Town Hall discussion involving tanker and truck operators to address safety concerns. Both FRSC and NUPENG reaffirmed their commitment to reducing road crashes and enhancing safety for tanker drivers in Anambra.
