Nigerian filmmaker Funke Akindele has encouraged people to remain true to themselves and pursue their ambitions, even while in romantic relationships.
In a recent X post, Akindele reflected on the dedication and sacrifices required for success, warning that distractions—sometimes disguised as love—can arise along the way.
“You work so hard, sleepless nights, sacrifices, building something from scratch. Then come the accolades! But you see, distractions will come in different forms, sometimes even in the form of love. Nothing wrong with falling in love o! Just don’t lose yourself,” she wrote.
Akindele urged her followers to recognise their worth, prioritise their goals, and practice self-love as they navigate relationships. “Know your worth, stay focused and love yourself first,” she added, noting that her advice applies to herself as well.
Akindele was previously married to Kehinde Almaroof Oloyede, but the marriage ended in 2013, less than a year after their wedding. She later revealed in an interview with Chude Jideonwo that naivety and societal expectations played a role in her decision to marry. In 2016, she married Nigerian music producer and filmmaker JJC Skillz. The couple had twin boys in December 2018, but their marriage ended in 2022 due to irreconcilable differences.
