Nashville Soccer Club is entering its fourth season in MLS and their principal owner John Ingram announced on Thursday that two-time MVP and NBA champion Giannis Antetokounmpo, as well as the NHL Nashville Predators’ all-time leading scorer Filip Forsberg, have joined the team’s ownership group.
Antetokounmpo is joined in the ownership group by his brothers Thanasis, Kostas and Alex, all of whom are professional basketball players. Thanasis joined Giannis in winning the NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021, and Kostas won one with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
Forsberg and Antetokounmpo join a robust and diverse ownership group whose most recent additions include actress Reese Witherspoon, her husband Jim Toth, and Tennessee Titans All-Pro running back Derrick Henry. Collectively, they contribute to one of the largest celebrity ownership groups in MLS.
Giannis says he fell in love with football in Greece
The Bucks superstar recalled that football is the first sport he loved as a child in his native Greece and that he has a special affection for it because his dad played it.
“My dad was a professional football player, and it was the first sport I fell in love with in Greece,” Antetokounmpo said.
“I always had a dream of having a football team. When my brothers and I scouted Nashville SC, we knew it was a team and a city we wanted to be involved in.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join the Boys in Gold, and I can’t wait to come to a game at GEODIS Park soon!”
Being more familiar with the city, Forsberg was quick to compliment the fans when describing his excitement at being involved.
“Nashville is the best sports city in the country, and I feel very fortunate to now be involved with two of our professional teams,” Forsberg detailed.
“Our city is a great family and a great fan base, and we support each other on and off the field.
“Nashville SC has been a great addition to our sports culture, and joining the ownership group was an opportunity I wasn’t going to pass up. I grew up as a Liverpool fan in Sweden, and after today I’m happy to add a second set of colors to cheer for!”
Nashville SC have reached the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs every year since joining the league in 2020, and they also boast reigning MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar. Their other star is US national team center back Walker Zimmerman, a two-time MLS Defender of the Year.
Last weekend, Nashville earned a 2-0 victory over New York City FC in the opening match of the 2023-24 season.
