The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), widely known as KAI, has rescued four nursing mothers and their babies from an illegal dumpsite in Agboju, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
According to a statement posted on the agency’s X page on Tuesday, the rescue operation took place on Monday as part of an ongoing inter-agency cleanup targeting illegal dumpsites, shanties, and other environmental violations along the corridor.
LAGESC Corps Marshal Olaniyi Cole said operatives were shocked to discover young mothers and their infants living in what he described as inhumane conditions at the dumpsite. One of the rescued babies was just nine days old, exposed to filth, poor air quality, and a lack of basic necessities.
The women were identified as Fareedat Muyideen, 23, from Kwara State, with her two-year-old child; Ayomide Ayomoke, 25, from Ondo State, with her 10-month-old baby; Amanda Oziema Abalihi, 20, from Anambra State, with her nine-day-old baby; and Chisom Ugo, 24, from Imo State, with her 11-month-old child.
Cole explained that the rescue was prompted by concerns for the health and safety of the women and their children. They are currently receiving medical attention and will be reunited with their families or referred to relevant welfare authorities as needed.
He urged anyone searching for the women to contact the authorities and assured that the agency is collaborating with government and humanitarian organizations to support their rehabilitation and reintegration.
The Corps Marshal also appealed to parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the welfare of their children, warning that children who suffer maltreatment at home may end up on the streets.
He reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to preventing child abuse and neglect, emphasizing that parents or guardians found responsible could face prosecution.
