The Association of Resident Doctors at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital (LTH), Ogbomoso, has issued a warning that it will resume its previously suspended strike on August 28, 2026, unless the Oyo State Government and hospital management address its outstanding welfare issues.
In a statement released on Thursday and signed by President Dr. Adedapo Mustapha and General Secretary Dr. John Stephen, the association recalled that it had suspended its industrial action on June 27, giving the authorities an eight-week window to resolve their concerns.
The doctors explained that the suspension was made in good faith to promote industrial harmony, support the institution’s progress, and avoid disruptions to healthcare services for Oyo State residents. However, as the deadline approaches, the association notes that several critical issues remain unresolved.
Their outstanding demands include the full implementation and release of the Medical Residency Training Fund, adoption of the new Professional Allowance structure, payment of minimum wage arrears, and urgent recruitment of resident doctors and other essential personnel.
The association described the welfare situation at the hospital as increasingly challenging, emphasizing that their requests are neither excessive nor unreasonable. They pointed out that many of these welfare packages have already been implemented in other healthcare institutions.
The ARD also raised alarms about a severe shortage of medical staff at LTH Ogbomoso, which has resulted in existing doctors being overworked and overstretched. The association warned that this manpower crisis jeopardizes patient safety and quality of care, as well as the sustainability of healthcare services.
“This is not simply about doctors’ comfort. The welfare of healthcare workers is directly linked to patient safety, quality of care, and the long-term viability of our services,” the statement read.
The association appealed to the Oyo State Governor and relevant authorities for urgent intervention, stressing the need to resolve these issues promptly to safeguard the future of LTH Ogbomoso.
“We have no desire to disrupt healthcare services or inconvenience the people of Oyo State. Our preference remains constructive engagement, dialogue, and a mutually beneficial resolution,” the statement added. Nonetheless, the association cautioned that its patience is not unlimited, having already suspended its strike and allowed ample time for the issues to be addressed.
“If these outstanding demands remain unresolved, we will resume our suspended industrial action effective August 28, 2026,” the ARD warned.
The doctors urged the hospital management and the Oyo State Government to take swift, decisive action before the deadline to prevent further disruption of medical services at LTH Ogbomoso. They reiterated their commitment to the hospital’s progress and the delivery of quality healthcare, stressing that a well-motivated, adequately staffed, and properly supported workforce is essential to achieving these goals.
