Luis Suarez joins Nacional and poses in his new shirt

It is now official, Luis Suarez has joined Nacional, returning to the club where he came through the youth ranks and made his professional debut in Uruguay.

The 34-year-old announced the move himself on social media, together with a photo of himself in a Nacional shirt.

It is appropriate that the move was announced on social media after the hashtag #SuarezANacional trended worldwide as fans tried to campaign for his signature.

“Now, officially! #SuarezEnNacional,” tweeted Suarez on Wednesday.

“I’m proud to put on my Nacional shirt again!

“Thanks to everyone for the support. We’ll see each other soon.”

The news was all but confirmed on Tuesday when, again on Twitter, Suarez himself released a video in which he said a pre-agreement had been reached with the club.

Nacional fans will be delighted that it has been made official now after spending weeks trying to show him how much they wanted him to come home. They petitioned on social media and took banners and even Suarez masks to Nacional’s last game.

Suarez thus returns to Uruguay and to Nacional 16 years after leaving to continue his career in Europe, first in the Netherlands and later in England and Spain.

A national icon, Suarez will be playing on home soil in the run up to the Qatar World Cup later this year. A decision that must surely owe something to sentimentality.

In a promotional video released by the club on Tuesday with the news of the pre-agreement, a voice can be heard saying that if Suarez goes to Nacional, it will be for love not money. That certainly seems to be the case and there is no shortage of love from the fans either.

Suarez at Nacional

It’s unclear how long Suarez will actually be at Nacional, but it is believed he has signed a contract tying him to the club until the end of 2022. This in effect means he will play for the Montevideo club until the World Cup.

The future

After that, it’s anyone’s guess, but it is thought there is an option for Suarez to extend his stay at Nacional by another year. Otherwise, he could move on, with a future in MLS already a rumoured possibility.

Wage cut

For love not money is certainly true for this move as Suarez will be taking a massive wage drop, compared to his European earnings, to go to Nacional. It is expected he will be the club’s joint-top earner, but without breaking their wage structure.

Suarez’s second debut for Club Nacional de Futbol could come as soon as next week in the Copa Sudamericana against Brazilian outfit Atletico Goinaniense. After that, he could feature in a total of around 15 games prior to the World Cup.
