Former First Lady Michelle Obama has put to rest swirling rumors about her marriage to Barack Obama, clarifying that her recent public absences are personal choices not signs of a split.
The speculation intensified after Michelle skipped both Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s second inauguration, prompting many to question the state of the Obamas’ relationship. But during an appearance on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast, Michelle addressed the rumors head-on.
“The interesting thing is that, when I say ‘no,’ for the most part people are like, ‘I get it, and I’m OK,’” she shared. “That’s the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with—disappointing people.”
She criticized the societal double standard that interprets women’s autonomy as something suspicious:
“This year, people couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself they had to assume my husband and I are divorcing. This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?”
Michelle added that it’s time women start asking deeper questions about their choices and motives:
“Who am I doing this for? And if it doesn’t fit into the stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labeled as something negative and horrible.”
With her characteristic poise and candor, Michelle reminded listeners that choosing personal peace over public expectation is not a crisis—it’s courage.
