Naira Marley Testifies in Mohbad’s Death Inquest, Denies Threats and Exploitation

Popular singer Naira Marley appeared before a Magistrate Court in Ikorodu via virtual proceedings on Friday, testifying in the Coroner’s inquest into the death of late singer Mohbad (Ilerioluwa Aloba).

Naira Marley’s Testimony

During his testimony before Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, Naira Marley revealed that Mohbad had signed a contract with Marlian Records for four albums, but the deal fell apart due to conflicts with his manager, Opere Babatunde.

He denied allegations of threats, molestation, and exploitation, insisting that a police report had cleared him. Addressing a viral video where Mohbad accused him and the Marlian crew of being a threat, Marley claimed the singer later apologized, blaming his statement on drug influence.

“The only issue he had was with his manager, Tunde. I tried to settle their dispute, even offering him a new manager. Their fight turned physical, but I didn’t report it because Mohbad employed Tunde himself.”

Marley also distanced himself from music promoter Sam Larry, stating:

“Sam Larry was a friend to both me and Mohbad. I never instructed him to harm Mohbad.”

He requested a virtual hearing due to safety concerns, claiming he had received death threats from people warning him not to appear in Ikorodu.

Mohbad’s Lawyer Challenges Marley’s Claims

A second witness, Mohbad’s lawyer Oluwasanmi Falade, contradicted Naira Marley’s statements. He confirmed that Mohbad had disputes with Marlian Records over unpaid royalties and had sent multiple letters without receiving a response.

Falade also testified that Mohbad had been attacked at Lekki Beach by Sam Larry and had reported it to the police. He revealed that the Force Headquarters tried twice to arrest Sam Larry but failed.

Court Orders Sam Larry’s Appearance, Summons Mohbad’s Driver & Pathologist

Following the testimonies, Magistrate Shotobi ruled that:

  • Sam Larry must appear before the Coroner’s court on April 11.
  • Mohbad’s driver must testify at the next hearing.
  • The pathologist who conducted Mohbad’s autopsy must submit his findings to the Coroner’s court and Chief Coroner before the next session.

The inquest continues as authorities work to uncover the true circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
