Despite a recent ban by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Eedris Abdulkareem’s controversial track “Tell Your Papa” is still making waves this time beyond Nigeria’s borders.
A viral video has surfaced online showing a group of Nigerians abroad dancing and vibing to the banned track, sparking massive reactions on social media. The clip shows the men in high spirits, singing along word-for-word as they enjoyed themselves, seemingly unbothered by the NBC’s classification of the song as “Not To Be Broadcast” (NTBB).
The NBC, in a memo dated April 9, 2025, and signed by Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Susan Obi, banned the song on the grounds that it violated Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which prohibits content deemed “inappropriate, offensive, or in breach of public decency.”
However, the restriction hasn’t stopped Nigerians abroad from embracing the song as an anthem of protest and cultural pride.
As one social media user put it:
“They banned it, and it became a bigger hit. Nigerians no dey carry last!”
Another added:
“This song clearly struck a nerve. You can’t silence music that speaks to the people.”
Whether seen as rebellious or revolutionary, “Tell Your Papa” is proving that sometimes, banning a song only amplifies its voice.
