Veteran broadcaster Tolu Oniru, widely known as Toolz, recently shared the surprising story behind her unexpected role in creating one of 2014’s biggest hit collaborations with Nigerian hip-hop artist Vector.
Taking to X on Sunday, Toolz responded to a fan’s prompt: Tell us a story that sounds fabricated but is 100% true. Music industry edition.
In her reply, Toolz recalled a lighthearted moment when she jokingly told Vector that she could sing and rap. To her surprise, Vector’s team arranged a recording session and invited her to join. I showed up just for a laugh, thinking it would be a fun hangout, she wrote.
That spontaneous studio visit led to the creation of the chart-topping track Shiga, which went on to dominate Nigerian airwaves in 2014. Reflecting on the experience, Toolz quipped, I should sue for royalties sha.
This behind-the-scenes revelation offers fans a unique glimpse into Toolz’s early involvement in music and her chance encounter with the recording industry alongside Vector.
