Barcelona have informed Real Betis that they are exercising their right to bring Emerson Royal back to the Camp Nou from July 1. The Brazilian had been co-owned by both LaLiga Santander clubs, but spent each of the last two seasons playing at Real Betis.
Now, though, the Catalans have paid nine million euros to sign the right-back outright, although Real Betis will be entitled to 20 percent of any future sale.
Having played at the Estadio Benito Villamarin since January 2019, Emerson managed five goals and 10 assists with Real Betis, playing 79 times in his two and a half years there.
Emerson had played for Ponte Preta and Atletico Mineiro prior to moving to LaLiga Santander, debuting in Brazil in 2017.
An assist maker
In the last two LaLiga Santander seasons, Emerson has contributed the fourth most assists of any defender in Spain’s top flight. His 10 have him behind Jordi Alba on 20, Jesus Navas‘ 16 and the 11 provided by Kieran Trippier.
As well as that, he has created more chances for his teammates than all but six other defenders.
Following Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia‘s respective arrivals from Manchester City, Emerson has become the third signing of Joan Laporta‘s presidency and of this week.
