Former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel has downplayed any chances of Jurgen Klopp returning to club management, even if Real Madrid come calling this summer. According to Babbel, the only job that could lure Klopp back into the dugout is managing the German national team.
Speaking to Makthavare, Babbel explained that Klopp now Global Head of Football at Red Bull is enjoying life away from the intense demands of club football and is unlikely to swap his current role for the high-pressure environment at the Santiago Bernabéu.
“He stopped managing because he had no energy anymore… and the pressure at Madrid is bigger than at Liverpool,” Babbel said. “He’s got the perfect life now at Red Bull. Why would he give that up to take over Madrid?”
Babbel added that Klopp’s current position allows him to be involved in football without the daily stress of training sessions and matchday demands. He described Klopp as looking “brilliant,” having “lost kilos,” and appearing far more relaxed than during his time on the touchline.
While Spanish reports recently claimed Real Madrid were considering Klopp as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, Babbel insisted that only a national team role, specifically Germany, might tempt him back.
“If the whole of German football is begging for Klopp, maybe then he’ll take the job,” he said. “But I don’t see him returning to club management.”
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is also being touted as a strong candidate to replace Ancelotti, should the Italian step down after potentially delivering a La Liga and Copa del Rey double this season.
Klopp stepped down from Liverpool at the end of the 2023–24 season after nearly a decade of success, citing fatigue and a need for a break from the game.
