Nollywood veteran Patience Ozokwor has urged affluent parents not to overindulge their children, warning that shielding them from life’s challenges can be detrimental to their growth and character.
In a recent interview, the actress cautioned against the tendency of some parents to protect their children from any form of hardship in the hope of giving them a better life.
According to Ozokwor, such overprotection may inadvertently deprive children of the opportunity to develop resilience and a true appreciation for what they have.
She further explained that children raised in affluence may find it difficult to comprehend the hard work and sacrifices their parents made to acquire their wealth. “The quickest way to ruin a child is to say you don’t want them to suffer as you did.
I’m not suggesting you let them suffer, but it’s important to let them face their own struggles and go through the process.
If they never experience struggle, imagine owning 20 houses in places like Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos—your children will simply be concerned with which property belongs to them, without understanding what it took to acquire those things, she said.
