The Oyo State Police Command has successfully rescued Mr. Owoade Mathew, a farmer and headmaster, who was kidnapped along the Igbojaye–Budo Aare bush road. The rescue followed a swift and coordinated security operation that put sustained pressure on the abductors.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the victim was freed on the evening of July 13, 2026, less than 24 hours after his abduction on July 12. The police explained that the intensive joint security operation and investigative efforts forced the kidnappers to abandon their victim and flee.
Following his rescue, Mr. Mathew was taken to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment. After receiving medical attention, he will be debriefed by investigators to assist ongoing efforts to identify, arrest, and prosecute those behind the abduction.
Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, praised the collaboration of other security agencies, community members, and residents whose support was vital to the operation’s success. He reassured the public of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Oyo State, vowing that criminal elements would not be allowed to operate with impunity.
The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report information that could help security agencies combat crime. Emergencies can be reported through the Oyo State Call Response Centre (toll-free line 615) or the Police Command Control Room at 08081768614 and 07055495413.
The rescue occurred just hours after reports surfaced that the kidnappers had demanded a ₦30 million ransom for Mr. Mathew’s release, underscoring growing concerns over rising incidents of kidnapping in the state.
