The presidency has officially confirmed the resignation of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and announced the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General with immediate effect.
The announcement follows earlier reports of Egbetokun’s resignation. While some sources suggested President Bola Tinubu asked him to step down, others cited health and family reasons. A statement from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, clarified that Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation after receiving his letter citing pressing family matters.
President Tinubu expressed his deep appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of dedicated service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, commending his professionalism and commitment to improving internal security during his tenure. Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was originally set to serve until June 2027 under the amended Police Act.
In light of ongoing security challenges, and in accordance with relevant laws, President Tinubu has approved Tunji Disu’s appointment as Acting Inspector-General of Police. The President expressed confidence that AIG Disu’s experience, operational expertise, and proven leadership will guide the police force effectively during this critical period.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General, after which his nomination will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing the capacity of institutions, and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and well-equipped to fulfill its constitutional mandate.
