PSG formalise offer for Messi and hope to close the deal soon

Paris Saint-Germain formally sent their offer to Lionel Messi on Sunday morning, just as he was addressing the press regarding his departure from Barcelona.

Due to LaLiga’s financial fair play constraints, Barcelona were unable to formalise the contract offer agreed between the club and Messi, and as a result the player will leave the Camp Nou, the playce where he has spent his entire professional career.

Although there had been contact between Messi and PSG over the last few months, talks had slowed down given it looked like the Argentine was going to stay at Barcelona, particularly after the LaLiga-CVC alliance which made more funds available to the Camp Nou club.

That said, along with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, Barcelona president Joan Laporta renounced this cash injection and thus the Blaugrana were unable to keep their star player.

Not long after Laporta told Messi’s father that Barcelona were no longer able to keep the promise made to renew his son’s deal, the PSG directors learned of the change in circumstances contacted the player’s entourage to rekindle their interest.

Messi’s lawyers were already analysing the formal offer from PSG on Sunday morning, and both parties are confident that a deal can be concluded shortly – mainly due to PSG’s rush – and we could see an announcement in the coming days.

As things stands Messi is not scheduled to travel to Paris on Sunday, as had been rumoured, but he could make the trip on Monday, before being signing and being presented to the press by Tuesday.

In parallel to all this, PSG are also working on a contract renewal for Kylian Mbappe, which would also be a massive coup, though it doesn’t seem as simple a task. Among other things, tying Mbappe down to a new deal will lead to enormous difficulty in meeting UEFA’s financial fair play regulations if no players were sold by the Parisians.
