Real Madrid have confirmed that midfielder Federico Valverde has been diagnosed with lumbosciatica, following medical tests conducted earlier today. The diagnosis was made after the Uruguayan international reported discomfort in his lower back and leg.

According to the club’s medical staff, Valverde is expected to return to full fitness by early June, making him available for selection ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

What is Lumbosciatica?

Lumbosciatica, commonly referred to as sciatica, is a condition that involves pain radiating from the lower back (lumbar region) down through the sciatic nerve, which extends through the hips, buttocks, and legs. It is usually caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, often due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscle inflammation in the lower back.

In athletes like Valverde, the condition may result from intense physical activity, improper posture, or repetitive strain on the spine and surrounding muscles. Symptoms often include:

Sharp or burning pain in the lower back or down one leg

Numbness or tingling sensations

Muscle weakness in the affected leg

Difficulty in standing or walking for extended periods

While the severity can vary, mild to moderate cases like Valverde’s are typically treatable with rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, and targeted rehabilitation. Surgical intervention is rarely needed unless the condition worsens or becomes chronic.

Club’s Medical Outlook
Real Madrid’s medical team is optimistic about Valverde’s recovery timeline. He is already undergoing a personalized treatment plan aimed at reducing inflammation and improving mobility. Barring any setbacks, he is expected to rejoin group training in the first week of June.

Given the expected return date, Valverde should be fit to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, which is scheduled to take place later this summer. His availability would be a major boost to Xabi Alonso’s squad.
