Reece James Shines for England with Stunning Free-Kick in Latvia Win

Reece James marked his long-awaited return to England’s starting XI with a brilliant free-kick in the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory over Latvia on Monday. The Chelsea defender, who last started for England in March 2023, admitted he was surprised to see his effort hit the net.

James, 24, has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines due to persistent injuries but has now forced his way back into Gareth Southgate’s plans. He acknowledged his difficult journey and expressed his joy at representing his country again.

“It has been a long time. I have had a frustrating two years. I’m so happy to be called up by my country again. I saw the wall and felt I could bend it round. I was a bit surprised it hit the net,” James told ITV Sport.

Having recovered under the guidance of former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, James now hopes to remain a key part of the squad heading into the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

What’s Next for James?

  • Returns to Chelsea ahead of their crucial Premier League clash vs. Tottenham (Thursday, April 4).
  • England’s upcoming fixtures:
    • Andorra (June) – World Cup qualifier
    • Senegal (Friendly at City Ground, June)

With his form and fitness improving, James looks set to cement his place in England’s squad for the road to the World Cup.
