The Nigerian military announced on Monday that a commanding officer and six soldiers of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) lost their lives after successfully repelling a terrorist attack in Monguno, Borno State.
The incident occurred late on April 12, 2026, when Sector 3 troops faced an isolated assault by terrorists at the Charlie 13 location.
According to a statement from Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the troops engaged the attackers in a fierce firefight, ultimately forcing the terrorists to retreat and maintaining control of the area.
Tragically, soon after the battle, the commanding officer—who had advanced to the frontline to assess the situation—was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED). Six other courageous personnel also lost their lives in the explosion.
The military noted that the commanding officer’s decision to personally move toward the troops, even after the immediate threat had been neutralized, demonstrated outstanding leadership, courage, and selflessness.
His willingness to advance despite ongoing danger is a testament to his valor, deep sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of his men and the success of the mission.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the officer and the other brave personnel, stating that their sacrifice will forever be remembered by the Armed Forces and the nation they served.
Despite the tragic loss, the military confirmed that troops remain firmly in control of the area following the attack.
