The Springboks are champions again, with Makazole Mapimpi and Cheslin Kolbescoring late tries to add to the 18 points kicked through the posts by Handre Pollard at penalties.

South Africa didn’t score a single try during their previous World Cup final wins over New Zealand in 1995 and over England in 2007 and it was another kicking game in the first half of this one.

Pollard and Owen Farrell traded kicks from penalties to make it a 12-6 lead for the South Africans at the half, before the scoreline reached 18-12 after a few more penalties at the beginning of the second half.

Pollard missed a very long attempt to add three more points in the 63rd minute, but moments later there was reason for his side to rejoice as Lukhanyo Am gathered a kick and offloaded for Mapimpi to score.

Pollard converted to leave England with a mountain to climb, before Cheslin Kolbe danced his way past a tiring defence to score a second try in the 74th minute, which was also converted to make it a 32-12 scoreline and to crown South Africa as world champions.
