Spain’s Former Football Chief Luis Rubiales Found Guilty of Sexual Assault

Spain’s High Court has found former football federation president Luis Rubiales guilty of sexual assault for kissing footballer Jenni Hermoso without her consent during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup medal ceremony. Rubiales has been fined €10,800 (£8,942) and banned from contacting Hermoso or coming within 200 meters of her for one year.

The court, however, acquitted him of coercion, dismissing allegations that he pressured Hermoso into publicly stating that the kiss was consensual.

Controversial Incident and Aftermath

The kiss, which took place as Spain celebrated their World Cup victory over England in Sydney, was broadcast worldwide and sparked widespread protests. Calls for Rubiales’ resignation intensified, leading to his eventual departure in September 2023 after FIFA suspended him and Spanish authorities launched an investigation.

While Rubiales defended his actions as an “act of affection” and claimed Hermoso had given consent, the player firmly denied this, stating in court that the incident had “stained one of the happiest days of my life.”

Legal Rulings and Broader Impact

Three other former football officials—Jorge Vilda (Spain’s World Cup-winning coach), Rubén Rivera (ex-head of marketing at the RFEF), and Albert Luque (former sporting director)—were acquitted of coercion charges. Prosecutors had sought a prison sentence for Rubiales, but the court opted for a fine instead.

The case has fueled a larger movement against sexism in Spanish football, with players advocating for greater equality and systemic change.
