Traffic on Lagos’ busy Third Mainland Bridge was brought to a standstill on Monday morning after residents of Oworonshoki staged a protest against the demolition of their homes.

The demonstrators, who turned out in large numbers, blocked the inward lane leading into their community, accusing the Lagos State Government of carrying out demolitions without adequate notice or compensation.

Many carried placards demanding accountability and immediate relief, alleging that the exercise had rendered families homeless.

The protest, which began at dawn, caused significant disruption on one of the city’s busiest arteries.

Motorists were stranded in heavy gridlock while some commuters were forced to seek alternative routes into the Lagos Mainland.

Security operatives were quickly deployed to the scene to restore order.

Later in the day, Lagos State Police Commissioner, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally intervened.

He visited the protest site, supervised security operations, and reopened the bridge to traffic.

Calm has been fully restored on Third Mainland Bridge, wrote lawyer Babaseyi Oluseyi in a post on X, confirming the resumption of traffic flow.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government had not issued an official statement regarding the demolitions or the grievances raised by residents.
