US forces carried out “powerful” strikes against Iran on Tuesday, responding to Iranian attacks on three commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to the US military.
US Central Command stated on X that the strikes aimed to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping. The statement described Iran’s actions as unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire.
Although a ceasefire took effect on April 8, sporadic violence has persisted in the Gulf, including repeated attacks on ships by Iranian forces and retaliatory US strikes. Tuesday’s action marked the first US strikes on Iran since a series of air raids late last month, which Washington also said were in response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels. (AFP)
