Panic broke out at the Federal High Court in Benin City on Tuesday when a female defendant collapsed and died during court proceedings, sending shockwaves through the courtroom.
The sudden death has ignited public outrage and renewed concerns about alleged negligence and the lack of adequate medical attention for detainees in custody.
What started as a routine session at Federal High Court 1 soon descended into confusion and mourning. The deceased, identified as 52-year-old Mrs. Titilayo Akindele, was appearing in relation to charges brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
According to sources, Mrs. Akindele had spent approximately three months in detention and arrived at court in a visibly frail condition. She was first arraigned the previous day, during which the court requested a medical report—a requirement she could not fulfill. Her case was called again on Tuesday, March 31.
Eyewitnesses said that despite her apparent inability to sit or stand, the proceedings continued. Shortly after her case was mentioned, she collapsed, sparking alarm among lawyers, court officials, and other attendees.
Attempts to revive her were hampered by the lack of immediate medical support on the premises. She was later confirmed dead, leaving the court community in shock and grief.
In response to the tragedy, the court suspended all remaining sessions for the day in respect of Mrs. Akindele, and her remains were transported to a mortuary.
The Edo State Command of the NDLEA has not yet released an official statement, though sources suggest that an internal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death may be underway.
