The English fan who brought 18,000 celebratory World Cup champions’ shirts… and they didn’t even reach the semi-finals

The World Cup always throws up ridiculous stories and this one about this one about Karl Baxter is no exception.

The world’s most optimistic English businessman has been dealt a major blow. After England’s promising start to the World Cup in Qatar he decided to take up a supplier’s offer and buy 18,000 commemorative World Cup shirts showing that England were the champions.

His company, Wholesale Clearance UK, based in Poole, bought 18,000 World Cup shirts. The shirts, white and with the image of the Cup, have the slogan: ‘England, World Cup Champions 2022. Football has finally come home’.

The entrepreneur wanted to get ahead of the pack and put them on sale for just under £30. But the elimination of Gareth Southgate’s side ruined his plan.

The businessman spoke to the Independent about what he is suffering.

I’m devastated that England are out. The first few performances in Qatar had really impressed me and I was convinced we would have managed to win this time. A supplier offered me the investment and I couldn’t say no,” Baxter said.

“But now I have 18,000 shirts saying we won and I don’t know what to do with them. I would like to appeal to the English: buy even just one, it will still be a piece of history and a reminder of how well we played in the 2022 World Cup. Even if our team didn’t triumph, in my opinion they are still the winners”.
