Falconets Triumph Over England 3-0 to Advance to World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Falconets have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over England in their Round of 16 encounter on Thursday in Poland.

Tosin Rafiu opened the scoring for Nigeria in the eighth minute, setting the tone for the match. Shortly after halftime, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei doubled the lead before Mary Mamudu sealed the win with a goal in the 73rd minute. The Falconets’ clinical performance at Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała ensured their place in the tournament’s last eight.

England had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot in the first half, but Nigerian captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma brilliantly denied Rachel Maltby, preserving her side’s lead going into the break. Just two minutes into the second half, Akekoromowei’s strike made it 2-0, further boosting Nigeria’s confidence.

Despite England’s efforts to mount a comeback, the Falconets remained resolute before Mamudu’s goal put the result beyond doubt. The win continues a remarkable turnaround for Moses Aduku’s side, who reached the knockout stage by finishing second in Group F with four points. After a 2-0 defeat to Spain and a goalless draw with China, Nigeria thrashed New Caledonia 10-1 in their final group game to secure qualification.

Having now scored 13 goals in their last two matches after failing to find the net in their first two outings, the Falconets are hitting top form as they chase their maiden U-20 Women’s World Cup title, having twice finished as runners-up in the competition.
