Leading telecom company Globacom has partnered with Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to co-host the 2025 International Submarine Cable Resilience Summit in Abuja.
The two-day event, organized alongside the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC), brought together global stakeholders to discuss ways to strengthen undersea cable networks, which serve as the backbone of global digital connectivity.
Key Highlights from the Summit:
🔹 Globacom’s Role: As the sole owner of the Glo 1 submarine cable, deployed in 2010, the company showcased its contributions to digital connectivity across Africa. The Glo 1 cable played a crucial role in maintaining network stability during the West African fibre cuts of 2024, proving its resilience.
🔹 Government Commitment: Minister of Communications, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized Nigeria’s efforts to secure its digital infrastructure, noting that submarine cables handle over 95% of global data traffic yet remain vulnerable to disruptions from cyber threats, natural disasters, and geopolitical tensions.
🔹 Global Perspective: ITU Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, stressed the need for continued investment in digital infrastructure, while Prof. Sandra Maximiano (Co-Chair, ITU Advisory Board) highlighted the importance of stockpiling spare parts and vessels to prevent cable disruptions.
The summit featured panel sessions addressing critical aspects of submarine cable security, maintenance, and regulatory policies to ensure long-term resilience in the telecommunications sector.
This collaboration reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its digital economy and enhancing global connectivity. 🚀
