The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed that all personnel suspected of involvement in the death of Joseph Okpe, a commercial bus driver, have been taken into custody.
Okpe reportedly died after being assaulted by a group of military officers following a minor traffic incident along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.
This development was disclosed to us on Tuesday by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force. According to earlier reports, Okpe, 43, succumbed to severe head injuries hours after the alleged assault by Air Force personnel, who had detained him following the incident.
A medical report obtained by PUNCH Metro indicated that Okpe sustained fatal injuries on May 9, when the officers repeatedly assaulted him. An affidavit filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, by Okpe’s brother, Innocent Okpe, stated that Joseph was performing his duties as a commercial driver when he was accosted by Air Force personnel traveling in a Coaster bus with registration number GO 1–14AF.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the damage to the military bus was estimated at less than N7,000, yet the officers allegedly demanded N100,000 as compensation. The assault continued until bystanders and fellow drivers intervened, pleading with the officers to stop. Colleagues of Okpe then raised N50,000, which they reportedly paid to the officers before the attack ceased and the officers departed.
Okpe, survived by his wife and three young children, was declared dead at Charing Cross Clinic, Mushin, after reportedly being turned away by several other medical facilities.
In a statement to us, Air Commodore Ejodame confirmed that the incident is being investigated by both military and civil authorities. He said, The Nigerian Air Force is aware of the reported incident and is deeply saddened by the loss of life.
Upon receiving information, all personnel suspected to be involved were immediately taken into custody, and the case is currently under investigation by the appropriate civil and military authorities. The NAF has extended condolences to the bereaved family and visited them to express sympathy and support.
As investigations continue, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage. The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to due process, accountability, and the rule of law. Further information will be provided as appropriate upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
