Police Arrest 19-Year-Old Delta Student for Illegal Firearm Possession

A 19-year-old university student in Delta State, DGreat Nwadozie, has admitted that a gun allegedly discovered in his possession during a police stop-and-search was bought for self-protection at a cost of N320,000.

Nwadozie made this confession in an interrogation video published on X by Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, on Tuesday.

According to Edafe, Nwadozie was apprehended with the firearm at a roundabout in the Asaba area. Four suspects were taken into custody in connection with the case, and a subsequent search of Nwadozie’s residence led to the recovery of an axe.

Edafe wrote, “These suspects were caught in possession of a gun recovered by policemen on stop-and-search duty. The main suspect, identified as DGreat, bought the gun in Onitsha for the sum of N350,000 and was preparing to be initiated into the Vikings Confraternity. He is only 19 years old and studying Criminology and Security Studies.”

In the video, Nwadozie explained that he contacted a man named Godwin, who helped him purchase the locally made pistol in Onitsha. He claimed he bought the weapon for protection against alleged harassment by some Hausa individuals and to collect development fees.

“My name is DGreat Nwadozie. I am 19 years old. I am a student of Osadebe University. I bought the gun for protection from Mr. Godwin at the rate of N320,000. He took me to a place where I bought it. I bought it for protection because we are usually disturbed by Hausa people and to collect development fees. I am about to be initiated into the Vikings cult group,” he stated, expressing regret for his actions.

Edafe concluded the interrogation by cautioning young people against involvement in crime, noting that it often leads to imprisonment or death.

This incident comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat cult-related violence and the spread of illegal firearms in Delta State and across Nigeria. The Delta State Police Command has recently intensified stop-and-search operations and intelligence-led raids targeting suspected cultists, kidnappers, and armed robbery gangs.

In May, the command arrested 11 suspected cultists and recovered firearms, ammunition, and other weapons in separate operations, as part of a broader crackdown on cultism, illegal arms possession, and violent crime.
