Wrexham captain James McClean was reportedly involved in an altercation with a Stockport fan at halftime during his side’s 1-0 victory at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday.
According to The Mirror, an angry away fan confronted McClean near the tunnel and allegedly attempted to punch the former Republic of Ireland international before stewards and police intervened to remove the individual. Neither Wrexham nor North Wales Police have issued a statement on the incident.
Despite the controversy, Wrexham’s victory saw them jump back into an automatic promotion spot. Jay Rodriguez scored his first goal for the club, netting the rebound after his poorly struck penalty was initially saved by Corey Addai. The penalty was awarded when McClean’s header struck Ibby Touray’s arm, a decision that frustrated Stockport manager Dave Challinor.
“I am not going to get myself into trouble by saying what I truly believe,” Challinor said.
“It’s not cost us three points because we weren’t good enough to score, but it has cost us a point because it was a really, really poor decision.”
This marks Wrexham’s 12th 1-0 victory of the 2024/25 season as they push for promotion. Their next fixture is an away trip to Exeter City on Friday, followed by an April 1st clash with Cambridge United.
