Senegal’s talismanic captain Sadio Mané was deservedly crowned the Player of the Tournament (Golden Ball) at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following his side’s hard-fought 1-0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco in a dramatic final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The 33-year-old Al-Nassr forward, in what he has suggested could be his final AFCON campaign, received the award from CAF President Patrice Motsepe amid jubilant scenes as Senegal lifted their second continental crown.
Mané’s leadership, creativity, and big-game mentality were instrumental throughout the competition, he contributed two goals and three assists, created the most chances (18 from open play), and reached a historic 20 career AFCON goal involvements (11 goals, 9 assists since detailed tracking began in 2010).
In the chaotic final, Mané played a calming role during the stoppage-time controversy when Senegal briefly walked off in protest over a contentious penalty awarded to Morocco.
He urged his teammates back onto the pitch, preserving their focus before Pape Gueye’s stunning extra-time strike sealed the win.
Morocco’s Brahim Díaz claimed the Golden Boot award with five goals, edging out competitors like Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen, both on four. The Real Madrid winger was a constant threat, scoring in four consecutive matches and helping Morocco reach their first final in 22 years.
Morocco’s Yassine Bounou (Bono) was won the Golden Glove award for his heroic displays, including crucial saves throughout the tournament and his composure in the semi-final penalty shootout victory over Nigeria.
