AFCON: Senegal Responds to CAF Ruling, Takes Morocco’s Title Dispute to Court

African football stands at the brink of crisis following the Senegalese Football Federation’s rejection of CAF’s dramatic decision to award the 2025 AFCON title to Morocco. Senegal has vowed to challenge the ruling in court, escalating tensions across the continent.

In a move that stunned fans, the Confederation of African Football Appeals Board on Tuesday overturned the original final result, declaring Morocco champions with a 3–0 win over Senegal. The verdict followed CAF’s determination that Senegal forfeited the match after their players left the pitch amid chaotic scenes during the January 19 final in Rabat.

The controversy erupted late in the match when a Senegalese goal was disallowed, and a penalty was awarded to Morocco — incidents that sparked protests and prompted Senegal’s players to temporarily abandon the game.

On Wednesday, the Senegalese FA issued a strongly worded statement condemning the Appeals Board’s decision as unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable, warning that it threatens the integrity of African football.

The federation confirmed it intends to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.

Senegal argues that the Appeals Board overturned an earlier Disciplinary Committee decision due to procedural flaws, alleging that Morocco was not properly heard in the initial proceedings. Nevertheless, the Board concluded that Senegal’s actions breached competition regulations — specifically Articles 82 and 84 — resulting in the forfeiture and the automatic 3–0 win for Morocco.

Despite the setback, Senegal has pledged to continue its fight, insisting that the ruling sets a dangerous precedent and vowing to pursue every legal avenue to reclaim the title it believes is rightfully theirs.

As the dispute heads to sport’s highest court, a moment that should have been a celebration of African football has instead erupted into one of its most contentious legal battles.
