Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, widely known as Osuofia, recently reflected on the beginnings of his acting journey, revealing that he was initially reluctant to step in front of the camera.
During an appearance on the Selah Meditate podcast, Owoh shared that he started his career in entertainment as a scriptwriter. However, his colleagues, amused by his behind-the-scenes comedic flair, urged him to consider acting.
My move to the spotlight was unplanned, Owoh recalled. I was writing scripts backstage when people began encouraging me to perform.
ATV even created a seven-minute stand-up comedy segment for me in the 1980s, insisting I should showcase my humor on camera since I was already entertaining everyone off-screen. Reluctantly, I agreed, and when I saw the positive reaction, that’s how my acting career began.
Owoh also addressed the challenges that accompany fame, emphasizing how it has limited his personal freedom. Fame took away my freedom, he admitted. Many aspire to be celebrities and see only the advantages, not the drawbacks. When you become famous, you lose the ability to do many things you once enjoyed freely. Your life becomes much more restricted in many ways.
