Team Nigeria Shines at Mongolia Wrestling Event, Secures One Silver and Two Bronze Medals

Team Nigeria wrapped up its campaign at the ongoing Ulaanbaatar 2026 United World Wrestling (UWW) 3rd Ranking Series in Mongolia with a total of three medals—one silver and two bronze—on Saturday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Hannah Ojo secured a silver medal in her category after a series of impressive performances. Ojo delivered a commanding 10-0 victory over Mongolia’s Tuvshinjargal Tarav to reach the semi-finals, where she overcame India’s Priya 5-1. In the final, Ojo fell to India’s Kajal, earning a well-deserved silver for Nigeria.

Esther Kolawole contributed a bronze medal to the team’s tally, dominating China’s Huan Yang 10-0 in the decisive bout. Kolawole made headlines by upsetting Russia’s world number one, Amina Tandelova, 6-0 en route to the bronze medal match, but narrowly lost to North Korea’s world silver medallist, Kim Ok-ju, 4-5, in an earlier round.

Christianah Ogunsanya also reached the podium, joining Ojo and Kolawole among Nigeria’s medalists at the prestigious event. Four female wrestlers represented Nigeria: Mercy Genesis (50kg), Tolulope Ogunsanya (53kg), Esther Kolawole (62kg), and Hannah Ojo (76kg).

The Ulaanbaatar Open is the third of four annual UWW Ranking Series tournaments, providing athletes with vital seeding points for future international championships. This year’s championship ran from June 4 to June 6 in Mongolia.
