The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the abduction of Tomisin, a 300-level female law student, who was kidnapped along with seven others while returning from the Scripture Union Student Fellowship (SUSF) National Conference at the Camp of Faith, Okigwe, Imo State.
Tomisin serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, as well as the Vice President of the UI chapter. According to a statement issued by the SUG President, Mr. Temidayo Adeboye, on Friday in Ibadan, Tomisin was travelling with the National General Director of SUSF, Mr. Uwem Cosmos, and other participants when the abduction occurred. The group was heading back to Ibadan after the national conference when the incident took place.
Mr. Adeboye addressed misinformation circulating on social media, noting that Tomisin is the only UI student among those declared missing after contact was lost with the group. He explained that her absence was noticed when she did not appear for her scheduled faculty examinations on Monday and Tuesday.
Another UI student from the Department of Music, who also attended the conference, has since returned safely.
The SUG President emphasized that the union has taken steps to verify the facts of the situation and is in communication with relevant religious organizations and security agencies to support rescue efforts.
We wish to clarify that reports claiming eight UI students are missing are inaccurate. Tomisin is the only University of Ibadan student currently unaccounted for in the incident, he stated.
Meanwhile, the UI Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, confirmed that the university is aware of the incident, although it had not been formally notified about the trip. She reiterated that Tomisin is the sole UI student involved, contrary to widespread reports of multiple abductions.
Mrs. Akinpelu added that Tomisin left the campus without officially informing the institution of her travel plans.
Members of the UI community and the Scripture Union have urged prayers and swift action for the release of Tomisin and the other abducted individuals.
